Political leadership for sustainable development – can democracy deliver?
Mere om
Almost halfway towards 2030, the world is not on track to reaching the SDGs. Political courage and leadership is needed to make the bold decisions to solve the “wild problems” expressed in the 2030 Agenda. At the same time, trust in politicians and democratic institutions is failing and polarisation is on the rise. People are turning their backs to the traditional political parties and increasingly engaging in Social Media echo chambers and single-issue movements, remote from the difficult prioritization exercise needed to tackle climate change, inequality and other complex problems. This panel will address the role of political culture and the relation with the press and the need for a new, constructive approach in both politics and media. How can we go from focussing on our disagreements and conflicts to a more constructive dialogue about solutions and pathways to change? How can we re-establish trust and excite people to engage in politics in a constructive manner?
